{"id":241,"date":"2025-02-07T17:38:51","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T17:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markwilkinson.ca\/pillar\/?p=241"},"modified":"2025-02-17T02:22:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T02:22:11","slug":"excitement-to-fear-and-anger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markwilkinson.ca\/pillar\/2025\/02\/07\/excitement-to-fear-and-anger\/","title":{"rendered":"Excitement to Fear and Anger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Excited appetite (expressed socially as love of money) leads to fear when exposed, or worse, anger to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a powerful insight. When appetite\u2014whether for food, wealth, power, or pleasure\u2014becomes excessive or wrongly directed, it fuels deeper spiritual struggles. The love of money (<em>philargyria<\/em> in Greek) is often an external expression of an inflamed appetite, and Scripture warns against it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cFor the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.\u201d<\/em> (1 Timothy 6:10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When such desires are exposed, they frequently trigger <strong>fear<\/strong>\u2014fear of loss, judgment, or unfulfilled craving. This fear can then escalate into <strong>anger<\/strong> as a defense mechanism to avoid accountability or maintain control. We see this pattern in Scripture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Achan\u2019s Greed Led to Fear and Judgment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Achan took what was forbidden, and when confronted, he admitted:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cI saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels. I coveted them and took them.\u201d<\/em> (Joshua 7:21)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His secret indulgence led to fear when it was exposed, and ultimately, his downfall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Rich Young Ruler\u2019s Fear of Loss<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus told him to sell his possessions and follow Him, but:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhen the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 19:22)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His love of wealth made him afraid to let go, trapping him in sorrow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pharisees\u2019 Fear and Anger When Exposed<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus exposed their love of power and wealth:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cYou clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 23:25)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of repenting, they responded with anger, plotting against Him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breaking Free from This Cycle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To overcome this trap of appetite \u2192 fear \u2192 anger, we must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trust in God\u2019s provision<\/strong> (<em>Matthew 6:31-33<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be content with what we have<\/strong> (<em>Hebrews 13:5<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use wealth righteously<\/strong> (<em>Luke 16:9<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confess and surrender our desires to God<\/strong> (<em>James 5:16<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Excited appetite (expressed socially as love of money) leads to fear when exposed, or worse, anger to cover.
