This study presents a biblical perspective on the form and personhood of the Holy Spirit, presenting that the Holy Spirit is not a separate being from the Father and the Son but rather the personal presence of God through His Spirit. Below is a structured summary of the key points with scriptural references:
1. Only Jesus Is the Express Image of God's Person
- "God… hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son… who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person…" (Hebrews 1:1-3)
- Jesus alone is the visible representation of God’s person (hypostasis), implying that no other distinct being, including the Holy Spirit, bears God's express image.
- "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…" (Genesis 1:26)
- The image after which man was made was pre-existing, which includes the nature of God’s person.
2. The Spirit Is Not a Separate Being from the Person
- "Nebuchadnezzar.. his spirit was troubled" (Daniel 2:1)
- It was not Nebuchadnezzar the spirit as that would be spiritualism.
- Nebuchadnezzar himself was troubled.
- "I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me." (Daniel 7:15)
- Daniel’s spirit is not a separate being from himself; it is his inner person.
- "Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?" (Isaiah 40:13, Romans 11:34)
- Knowing God's mind is equivalent to directing His Spirit, implying unity between God and His Spirit.
3. The Holy Spirit Is God's Personal Presence, Not Another Being
- "We will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (John 14:23)
- Only the Father and Son are mentioned as abiding with believers; no third divine being is introduced.
- "The Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Corinthians 3:17)
- The Spirit is identified with "the Lord," indicating that Christ manifests Himself through the Spirit.
- "If the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you." (Romans 8:11)
- The Spirit that dwells in believers is the Father's Spirit, meaning it is He who raises them.
4. The Holy Spirit Is the Spirit of Christ
- "Prophecy came… by the Holy Ghost." (2 Peter 1:21)
- "The Spirit of Christ… testified beforehand…" (1 Peter 1:10-11)
- The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Christ are used interchangeably.
- "For the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified." (John 7:39)
- The Spirit’s coming was dependent on Jesus’ glorification, suggesting a change in function rather than the arrival of a new divine person.
- "I am the way, the truth, and the life…" (John 14:6)
- Jesus is the Truth, and the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17), implying they are one in the same presence.
5. The Comforter and Christ’s Manifestation
- "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter…" (John 14:16)
- "Another" does not mean a different being but another way in which Christ will be present with them (John 14:17-18).
- "How is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?" (John 14:22)
- Jesus Himself, not another being, manifests to His followers through the Spirit.
6. Only Two Divine Beings in Scripture
- "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days…" (Daniel 7:13)
- "There is one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ…" (1 Corinthians 8:6)
- "Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 1:7)
- Paul consistently refers to only two divine beings, not three.
- "Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever." (Revelation 5:13)
- Only the Father and the Lamb (Jesus) receive worship.
Conclusion
- The Holy Spirit is not a separate divine being but rather the personal Spirit of the Father and Son.
- The Spirit is God's active presence in believers, not a distinct third person.
- Jesus manifests Himself to His followers through the Spirit, making them one with Him and the Father.
- The Bible consistently presents only the Father and the Son as divine beings, never a separate third divine being.
Excellent start Mark. There is alot here.
Hi Mark I believe the comforter, the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit is a third member of the Godhead. Jesus says that the Father will send Him and he will teach, guide and instruct. If the Father sends the spirit then it must be separate from the Father and the Son, whom the Father also sent.
All three were at the creation, all three at the conception and all three at Jesus baptism? There are that bare record in heaven…
